JVC HA-FX34R Marshmallow In-Ear Headphones (Red) Review

We own three sets of these JVC Marshmallow Headphones (for me and my two teens) and they are exactly what I was looking for to replace the earbuds that came with my iPods. Unlike the the standard iTouch earbuds, these fit directly into the ear canal so they stay in place if fitted correctly. Here are my observations:

+ Great Sound Quality - While not a serious audiophile, to my ears these produce a rich sound at all ranges.
+ Comfortable - The package contains two sizes of memory foam ear pieces, small (attached) and large. This was important to me because my left ear canal is larger than my right and I was able to get a get a good fit by swapping out the preinstalled left piece.
+ Noise Blocking - Outside noise\sounds are almost completely blocked out.
+ Adjustable Slide - Can be tightened up for use while exercising by sliding up the "stop", this significantly reduces the flopping of the cords.

For best fit, be sure to follow the directions and roll the memory foam pieces between your fingers before putting them in your ears. This will allow them to expand in your ear canal, making a very secure and tight seal.

They also come in a lot of different colors, which is good if you have other headphone users in the house (my set is black, my daughter has green and my son has silver).

I decided to buy these because they're cheap and the average review rating is the same as a 0 pair of noise canceling headphones. They're my first noise canceling headphones and I'm too cheap to pay much more for headphones.

I travel often and even if you use these only on air travel one time, they're worth the price. I wore them on a flight from DC to South Korea, which was over 22-hours of flight travel time, a night sleeping on the floor with 40 other people, then a 4 hour bus ride to my final destination. I had done the same trip 5 weeks before and the noise of the people on the plane and even the air movement gave me a debilitating migraine, so I bought these and a pair of Eagle Creek Travel Gear Comfort Eye Shade ([...]) and I will never travel without this pair again. They drowned out the noise of the air and the people, I enjoyed my music and the movie and slept much better with them on.

I now wear them in my office to drown out the noise of other people, walking to work, and while listening to radio, a movie or music on my iPod when I'm cleaning, vacuuming or doing dishes.

A few minor complaints are: if you're listening to these at a higher volume, then person next to you will probably hear every word, when in my backpack the "on" button for the noise canceling feature comes on all the time and wastes battery power--but I've had these for 2 months and using them a LOT and haven't changed batteries yet) and if you have glasses or wear them for a long time, it hurts after a while, but a slight adjustment every few hours and you'll be fine.

For the price, i'd buy them again and really suggest giving them as a gift with the Eagle Creek eyemask to anyone who travels or commutes a lot.

I have a few MP3 Players including 2 i-Pods a Zune and a Sony S series. I've been searching for the best sounding ear-buds to compliment my investment in the MP3 players and the Sony MDR-EX85LP's are it. I ended up with a few sets that aren't worth mentioning, but some people have compared these with the Sennheiser CX500's. I have two sets of Sennheiser CX500s, they're nice but do not have the depth or richness of these inexpensive ear-buds. In fact I played a few songs over and over on the same player and in every case the Sony's reproduced a better over sound and bottom end than the Sennheiser CX500's. Being a fan of Sennheiser headphones I actually bought another set after the test results ending up with the same results.

Sound is subjective and I might love the sound of a certain speaker or headset and someone else might not like it as well. so it is hard to be absolute, but I use Sennheiser 280 Pros for my home recording studio and love em, but for my MP3 players the Sony EX85LP's compared to the Sennheiser CX500's are a much better sounding ear-bud.

I wasn't sure of purchasing these ear phones. I had my old Sony ear phones that worked great. Why should I purchase another? But I'm glad I did, these sounded better, especially with a greater bass sound. They are not as comfortable as my old ones but they are comfy enough. Its probably due to the size of the earbuds that came with it. My old ear phone's medium ear buds are slightly different sizes then the new,which fit my ears better. The earbuds are not compatible to each other so I couldn't use my old ones on the new earphones. Overall they are still comfortable and the sound is much better. A little afraid of how the ear phones are constructed, but the past few months it has taken alot of punishment. You can't go wrong with Sony. My step son has the Bose noise cancelling ear phones and IMO this Sony has a crisper and better sound.

I have been using this daily for about a month now. I use it on my bus commute to work during the week, and on weekends while skiing. It's paired up with an HTC Excalibur. MP3 playback control(a2dp) and call handling both work without a hitch. When I turn the system volume and Windows Media Player volume up to 100%, there is plenty of volume (with a little headroom) for both music and phone calls. The included earbuds are okay, but not great, but one of the best features of this device is the ability to plug in the ear appliance of your choice. The unit drives my fav buds and sounds almost as good as direct connect (certainly as good as my smartphone can provide). I use it for a couple hours on my daily roundtrip commute, and usually about 6 hours when on the slopes - battery time has been adequate for me. The kewl little charging cradle is a convenient touch. I had no problems pairing it up with the HTC but haven't tried it with any other device. I clip the device, which has the mic hole on the front, to my collar, and callers say they have no problems understanding me. It's been in and out of my laptop bag and ski bag dozens of times, and seems to be holding up well. My only minor complaint is that the spring force on the clip is a little inadequate. I solved this by adding a small rubber pad to the inside of one side of the clip for a little additional friction - problem solved. Otherwise, it has met all my expectations!

I ordered this product from Amazon. It shipped right away and got to me in Iraq in about 2 weeks. I've always had issues making out what is being said on tv. It doesn't matter how loud the volume is, I always miss out on some dialoge during a movie or program. Well with this headset on it's like night and day. Everything is crystal cear. Bass and treble are very good. If your like me and miss out on some of what's said get these. You sometimes have to move them around in the base so that they start charging but there is a red light indicator to let you know whether you have good contact. Playing video games on my Xbox 360 is really fun. Some of the voices in the games sound very close to you and it makes the game feel more real.
If you are close to a wireless router that gives off a 2.4ghz signal you probably will have issues. Fix that by upgrading to wireless N technology that runs off of 5ghz and you will overcome this issue. I have not been able to really test out range yet because I live in a confined space. Good product though, I recommend them.

I got these about a year ago primarily for working out. Ear buds simply don't stay in my ears and "over the head" headphones get in the way when I'm trying to wipe sweat off. These headphones do stay put relatively well, but they only stay "on" my ear, not "in" my ear. I know that sounds nit picky, but the sound quality diminishes for me the farther the speaker is from being in my ear. If a good part of a song is coming up, I'll have to push them back in to get the full effect. That may be due to me having funky shaped ears or something (everyone got a picture in their head?! :p), so I won't dock major points for that. Other than that, they do the job and get me through my workout. If they stop working, I will probably look for another set that stays "in" my ear better.

I love these headphones -- the extension cable is great. Sometimes I'll exercise where I'll have the iPod on me (in a pocket or armband) and the cord is short enough to not get in the way but other times I'll put it in the holder on an elliptical and then it is great because there is plenty of slack for me to move.

The fit is *great* different sized covers really make the difference. And they can be used with OR without the around the ear support.. which is nice when you're not exercising and don't want to peel the thing around your ears every time someone comes to talk to you.

The one drawback is that the sound quality depends on the headphones being firmly inside your ear. From time to time when I exercise the slip and the sound quality is virtually gone. A little nudge and I'm good again. BUT at the same time, my coworkers don't hear my music even when I have the volume up pretty high.

All in all, great headphones which are extremely versatile. This is my second pair (convenience of having more than one).

My only gripe with these wonderful headphones are that the wires at both ends eventually go bad at 3-6 months of really heavy use (I'm pretty ruthless with my equipment). Otherwise, I can't say enough good things about these -- the cord is of ample lenght, fits in your ears well, fits your heads well, good sound range, low profile, goes well with the black ipod. Its too bad these aren't available at more places, but they are very reasonably priced at Amazon. I'm scared they will be discontinued at some point -- I'd be crushed. Four stars for the flaw at with the wire connection at both ends (the low price makes up for it).

I've used many premium Sony earphones over the years starting with the MDR-EX70LP. I have the MDR-EX75, MDR-EX85, MDR-EX90, MDR-EX500, MDR-EX700. These rate very good -- especially for the price. Tone-wise these are very similar to the EX90s -- very balanced and suitable for all kinds of music: Want bass? These have it. Want decent midrange? These have it. Want clear highs? These have it. Nothing is over-emphasized or conspicuously missing. The EX-75 tend to be clear sounding becuase of a somewhat emphasized treble but they're missing midrange, the EX-500 have solid midrange and treble but are somewhat lacking in bass. Even the mighty and expensive MDR-EX700 suffer from an overemphasis in the midrange. The MDR-EX85 provides solid, balanced, neutral performance. The connector is iPhone/iPod Touch friendly. At the discounted price, the MDR-EX85LP are a bargain.

Fit - Many earbuds are simply too large to stay comfortably in my ear. I'm not a little person. I'm six feet tall, one hundred eighty pounds. Even the famous iPod earbuds are too big, and they are some of the best quality earbuds available. Large earbuds are uncomfortable and they won't stay in your ear. I really like these earbuds because they fit comfortably and they don't fall out.

Sound quality - These earbuds have sound quality that is equal to or better than the most expensive earbuds that I've ever purchased.

Longevity - The biggest problem with most earbuds is that the very fine copper wire near the plug eventually breaks inside the rubber insulation due to repeated bending of the wire during normal use. This causes one or both of the speakers to lose connectivity intermittently, and eventually permanently. Every set of earbuds that I have ever owned has eventually failed in this manner, but these earbuds have lasted longer than any earbuds that I have ever purchased. I am still using the first set of earbuds that I purchased over a year ago, and that is just unheard of for me considering the use and abuse to which I submit my earbuds.

Buy these earbuds and don't look back. All of those fancy, expensive earbuds with hip sounding names and slick marketing and high prices do not offer any better performance than these.

I purchased these headphones as I have previously owned Denon AH-C551K In-Ear Headphone and Sony MDR-EX71SL Fontopia In-The-Ear Headphones (Black), but I lost the first, and my cat chewed the second. I wanted a pair of headphones that were around or under the fifty dollar mark, and came with a case so I could protect them from my dear cat, but not so expensive that if they do get destroyed, I can afford to replace them. I have had issues before with certain in-ear headphone just not staying seated well. The Denon's were average, the sony's were better, but the Sony's sound quality was disappointing. I have found so far that these headphones have nice sound quality. The nice thing is that the over the ear chord approach tends to keep them in place better than simple Y-chord ones. The down side is that they are a bit fiddly to place in your ear, though I suppose that is something one may get used to. The other problem with this product is that it doesn't come with a chord extension apparently, and the chord is a rather short, so it will definitely not reach from you to the back of your computer. The chord construction itself however is very nice, it's well shielded and durable looking. The product also seems well constructed, and the design well thought out. They sit nicely in my ear opening and are quite comfortable, after awhile I quite forget they are there. I think the benefits far outweigh the drawback, and I would definitely recommend these.

I bought these ear buds to monitor sound input from specialized microphones for my camcorder, but I'm also using them with my computer. Sound quality is very comparable to a high-end headset I've been using for the same purposes... maybe even better. I can pick up sound details in both the high and low freq range you can't hear on our home theater sound system. The base is very strong for an ear bud -- not too strong. The sound quality is so excellent I can hardly see spending any more.

I also rate the comfort very high, with the understanding that for any given pair of ears, a given ear bud configuration will seat only so soundly for exercise (retention), or lightly, for comfort at a desk for instance. The diameter of these buds is quite large. When I took them out of the package, I first wondered how they were going to (possibly) seat in my ears. One thing a user needs to understand is that the speaker portion of these buds needs to face forward. In other words, there's a left and a right bud. In my ears (to my surprise), they lay lightly where they're suppose to -- which of course is great for an office environment. There is very little pressure to create hot (bearing) spots during longer use... but as a consequence of that plus, I would think some folks will find (as they might with any other bud) that they might not stay in their ears so well during vigorous exercise. The goals of each require mutually exclusive design approaches.

I do however intend to use these to monitor sound during relatively vigorous wilderness filming... and they do seem to stay where they're supposed to be enough that I don't anticipate any trouble keeping them in my ears. The bottom line I think is that you need to choose either a headset or ear buds for either vigorous or gentle conditions. Particularly if your ears are sensitive to pressure, it's probably not reasonable to expect one ear bud or headset design to work best for you over both conditions.

Overall then, I don't think you're going to find better sound quality; and I think the large diameter speakers of these ear buds is instrumental. These were a great buy.

I find the "earbud" and "over the ear" styles annoying and uncomfortable and I HATE it when other people have their music up so loud everyone around them is subjected to their usually bad taste in music. This seems to happen more with the earbud headphones than with other types. In any case, I have asked my friends if they can hear my music with these headphones and their answer is always "NO". Having said that, I don't have a desire to go deaf in the next five years, which means I keep the volume at a moderate level.

Also, I don't need to look "cool" - I just want good sound quality and headphones that will stay put and not hurt my ears. The sound quality is superior to the other brands in the same price range, but these headphones are not meant for listening to opera, either, so don't buy them and then complain that you can't hear the third violin.

I have been purchasing cheap earphones for years which only last about 2-3 months. I then sat down one day and calulated what I have spent on earphones over the last 2 years and I was NOT happy with the total. I then decided to buy Bose and my brother explained Bose are over priced and you can get the same quality of sound out of the Sony MdrEX earphones which were way cheaper and so I purchased the Sony earphones. They are GREAT!!!!! They are light, block out all the noise around me and offer a great sound. Thanks brother, thanks to you and your advice, I can now enjoy my commute to work!

The little earphones that come with an ipod work terribly for me. No matter how I try they just won't stay in my ears. They may rest there a couple of minutes but the moment I move a little out they come. So I have been using the headset from my old portable cd player. These stay on of course but defeat the whole purpose of the small compact ipod.

I had to search for something different when I downloaded 3 walking exercise programs to my ipod. I was so excited to start but in no way could I do it with the huge headsets I had been using. I found these and was so excited. It was exactly what I needed. I love the size of the regular ipod speakers but I needed something to keep them in my ear. I have big ears and these clips are awesome. They perfectly rest comfortable on my ears and keep the speakers stationary in place. Now I can walk all over the place, sweat etc. and they still stay in place providing great sound and ease of use.

I can tell you that I will definitely use my ipod a lot more now. And also I find the item to be of high quality. It seems that many people are having problems with them stoping working after a period of time or falling apart. Even though well made these ear clip speakers are fragile and must be handled with care. If you toss them around like in a gym bag and then grab around trying to find them - yes, eventually they will get damaged. Treat them with care and they will last a long time.
